How good was
Maddie Rooney over the last month? So good that the Western Collegiate Hockey Association selected her as its Defensive Player of the Month for November Thursday.
The sophomore goaltender was 4-1-1 with a .750 winning percentage in November, despite playing four of her six games against ranked teams. The product of Andover, Minn. was twice the WCHA's Defensive Player of the Week (Nov. 15 and Nov. 22) and her 181 saves was the most by any goaltender in the league. Twice Rooney made 43 saves in a game or more, including 45 against the top-ranked Badgers on Nov. 18 to help UMD to a 4-1 victory and the first by a Bulldog squad over a No. 1 since 2012. Rooney had a 1.64 GAA and .948 saves percentage over this month. Rooney also owns the NCAA's eighth best saves percentage at .939, and has made the second most saves of any goaltender in the country at 450.
This is the second season the WCHA has featured player of the month selections. Rooney is the second-ever Bulldog selection --
Lara Stalder was the Offensive Player of the Month last December.
The Bulldogs travel to St. Cloud State University to face the Huskies tomorrow night at 7:07 p.m.
