BULLDOGS SCORE EARLY AND LATE, BUT PITT STATE WALKS OFF UMD IN GETAWAY GAME

The University of Minnesota Duluth tried to make a first inning crooked number hold up, but Pittsburg State University walked-off the Bulldogs for the second straight game, downing UMD 7-6 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

Senior first baseman Alex Wojciechowski launched a game-tying home run, his fifth of the season, in the ninth inning after the Gorillas took the lead for the first time Sunday in the eighth inning roughing up Bulldog senior closer Wes Mleziva as he began his second inning of work. UMD (1-3) sent senior second baseman Jimmy Heck (0-1) to the mound for the first time since his freshman season, surrendering a lead-off single, a pair of sacrifice groundouts, and a single by senior infielder Jacob Boylan, his third knock of the day, that finished the walk-off win for Pittsburg State (5-3).

Sophomore center fielder Brett Milazzo lined a triple to left field to begin the game for the Bulldogs. A walk by Grant Farley followed before A. Wojciechowski lifted a triple of his own to drive in both men. Senior third baseman Kyle Comer lifted a fly ball to the outfield, bringing home "Wojo," but an appeal attempt determined he had left early, costing the Bulldogs a run. Heck, who started in the middle infield before taking the mound in the ninth, would pick up his teammate in the very next at-bat, launching his second home run of the season -- tying his total from 2015  in just four games.

Freshman infielder Jake Durossette would get Pitt State a run back in the next inning, and sophomore first baseman Andrew Vogelbaugh, who hit four home runs Saturday, would add an RBI single in the third. Wojciechowski and Heck each added an RBI double in the fifth to give the Bulldogs a 5-2 advantage. Vogelbaugh continued to be a pest for UMD, scoring runs in the fifth and seventh innings while going 2-for-3 with two walks on the day.

Senior southpaw Spencer Diedrich started on the mound for the Bulldgs, surrendering a pair of runs on five hits in 3.1 innings of work while striking out three. He was relieved by sophomore righty Alex Ferguson, who worked the next 2.2 innings, allowing two runs but just one earned, as UMD did itself little favor with three errors on the day.

On the other side of the diamond, sophomore lefty Cooper Gardner started the match-up for the Gorillas, recovering from his first inning to go 3.2 innings allowing just the three runs but five walks and four hits. Junior right-hander Ty Rowe (2-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen, working the final two innings and allowing just one hit, Wojciechowski's home run that had tied the game.

The Bulldogs will be off for two weeks before heading to the RussMatt Central Florida Invite where they'll play eight games against six different opponents in five days. UMD will begin its annual Florida trip on Monday, March 7 with a doubleheader against Saint Joseph's (Ind.) College. First pitch is set for 10:00 a.m.
