Three University of Minnesota Duluth seniors combined for a shutout as the Bulldogs split adoubleheader with St. Joseph's (Ind.) College on day one in Auburndale, Florida on Monday.
UMD (2-4) picked up a 4-0 shutout on Monday morning thanks to 5.1 innings of three-hit ball from left-hander
Spencer Diedrich with right-handed relievers
Matt Mattiacci and
Wes Mleziva combining for a perfect final 1.2 innings of relief. Diedrich struck out seven and walked a pair, scattering two bloops to the outfield and an infield hit. Diedrich (1-0) would return to the line-up in game two as a pinch hitter and defensive replacement, going 1-for-2 with a double.
Freshman third baseman
Tyler Wojciechowski started at designated hitter and starred as the offensive hero of game one, lining a two-out, bases-loaded single to center field that plated the first two runs of the game in the opening inning. He'd add a double in the fourth inning, eventually coming around to score on an error by the St. Joe's (5-5) infield. Finishing 3-for-3 before being taken out for a pinch runner, he returned in game two with a pinch hit single. Senior third baseman
Kyle Comer plated the fourth run of the game for UMD in the seventh inning, ripping a triple down the right field line to score junior outfielder
Grant Farley. Comer also added a double earlier in the game, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.
St. Joseph's 11, UMD 6Game two saw a comeback effort by the Bulldog offense scoring four runs with two outs in the third inning without a baserunner to that point. A walk by junior shortstop
Kyle Hoffman started the rally, followed by singles from sophomore outfielder
Brett Milazzo and Farley before a three-run bomb from senior first baseman
Alex Wojciechowski put the Bulldogs up 4-3 for the first time in the game. St. Joe's regained the lead in the fifth inning as the Pumas launched their second home run of the game off the bat of Martin Napleton. UMD's pitching and defense failed to back up the offense in the nightcap as it did in game one. Nine walks, six wild pitches, two passed balls, one beanball, and an error came back to bite the Bulldogs.
Sophomore starter
Alex Ferguson took the ball in game two, striking out six in 4.2 innings of work but surrendered the tying and go-ahead runs in the fifth inning before giving way to the bullpen. Tasker Trobel (1-0) worked his way through four innings to get the win for St. Joseph's, giving up four runs. Mark Chemello (1) picked up the save as he entered with the tying run at the plate before ending a Bulldog rally in the bottom of the sixth.
UMD returns to Lake Myrtle Park tomorrow morning looking to bounce back in an early start against Ohio Dominican University at 9:00 a.m. ET. The nine-inning, single game will be followed by another against Slippery Rock University scheduled for 12:30 p.m. ET.
