The University of Minnesota Duluth concluded its six-day, 10-game stay in Clermont, Fla., with a 9-1 record and seven straight victories. The latest of those two triumphs came Friday afternoon when the Bulldogs toppled 15th-ranked Caldwell College, 9-7, and Northwood University 4-3.
The Bulldogs will now return to Minnesota sitting at 11-6 with their next assignments being their 2016 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference openers on March 22 at St. Cloud State University.
Trailing 1-0 to Caldwell (1-1 overall) in the bottom of the third, the Bulldogs erupted for six runs, getting back-to-back home runs to left center field from senior catcher
Ashley Lewis (a three-run dinger) and sophomore second baseman
Natalie Wright. Wright went on to drive in another run the sixth inning on her first triple of the year. Third baseman
Sami Schnyder and first baseman
Abbey Nelson both collected doubles for the Bulldogs while a third senior, pitcher
Cayli Sadler, registered a complete game triumph.
The Bulldogs never trailed against Northwood, holding leads of 1-0 after two innings and 4-1 through four. UMD pounded out 10 hits, with Wright (2-for3), Lewis (2-for-3) and senior right fielder
Ashley Schilling (2-for-2) accounting for six of those. Freshman
Valerie Hohol went the first three innings in the circle, giving up one run and four hits before being relieved by Sadler, who pitched five-hit, two-run ball the rest of the way to improve to 6-4 on the year.
