Not even a record-breaking time was enough to thrust the University of Minnesota Duluth's distance medley relay team into the winner's circle at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in Pittsburg, Kan., Friday night.
The foursome of junior
Breanna Colbenson, freshman
Michaela Hesse, senior
Hannah Olson and sophomore Emily Trost, who qualified for the event with the best clocking in the country (11:35.87), finished in 11:26.86 to place second to Hillsdale College's 11:24.39 effort. The finish was the highest ever for a Bulldog relay unit at a national meet -- indoor or outdoor -- and earned both Olson and Trost their second NCAA II indoor All-American citation.
Earlier in the day, Trost (third place in 4:52.24) and Olson (12th in 4:54.62) took part in the mile-run preliminaries and each qualified for Saturday afternoon's finals (5:05 p.m.). Colbenson will run in the 3,000-meter finals on Saturday at 6:45 p.m.
