Riding the left arm of junior pitcher
Sam Hartmann for a second straight night, the University of Minnesota Duluth knocked Grand Valley State from the ranks of the unbeatens with a 5-0 triumph Monday. The Bulldogs, now 5-6 on the year, opened the second of six days they'll spend in Clermont, Fla., by falling 6-5 to Wilmington University (Del.).
Hartmann, who pitched a 1-0 shut out against Holy Family University the previous night, surrendered just four hits -- all singles -- to the Lakers and struck out four while hiking her 2016 record to 3-2. The Bulldogs scored once in the third inning and added a pair of runs in both the next innings en route to handing Grand Valley State its first loss in eight games this season. UMD scratched out just four hits of its own -- by four different players, including junior left fielder
Hailey Lundquist, who had a double, one RBI and one run.
Against Wilmington, the Bulldogs grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Wildcats (3-4) scored six unaswered runs and were up 6-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh. After the first two batters were retired, UMD rallied with three runs to pull to within 6-5 and had runners on second and third before Brooklyn Lachette came on in relief and struck out the one batter she faced. Sophomore shortstop
Becky Smith and senior first baseman
Abbey Nelson both went 2-for-3 for the Bulldogs, who pounded out eight hits in the setback. UMD senior pitcher
Cayli Sadler gave up seven hits and had three punchouts in seven innings of work.
Next up for UMD are Tuesday clashes with Saginaw Valley State University (9 a.m. ET) and Trevecca Nazarene University (1 p.m.).
