The University of Minnesota Duluth added two more victories to its Spring Break-trip harvest Tuesday, following up a 7-3 takedown of Saginaw Valley State University by holding off
Trevecca Nazarene University 6-4 in Clermont, Fla.
The double wins pushed the Bulldogs over the .500 mark for the first time this season (7-6 overall) and hiked their record in Floriday to 5-1 with four games to go.
UMD used a four-run third inning to break a 0-0 deadlock with Saginaw Valley (1-4) and then scored once in each of the next three innings. Senior third baseman
Sami Schnyder, who went 2-for-4 with one RBI, was the lone Bulldog with a multi-hit game. Junior left fielder
Hailey Lundquist had one of the Bulldogs' four other hits -- a clutch two-out, two-run double in the top of the third. Senior pitcher
Cayli Sadler secured the complete-game win and improved to 3-4 with a four-hit, three-strikeout performance.
Against Trevecca Nazarene, UMD set the tone early by scoring in the bottom of the first on a bases-loaded walk to Lundquist. Three innings later, the Bulldogs added to extended their lead to 4-0, getting a two-run triple from sophomore centerfielder Hannah Schmoll, who then came home on sophomore second baseman Natalie Wright's single. The Trojans put up a three spot in sixth, but Schmoll's first home run of the season (and second of her career), a two-run shot, in the bottom half of that inning put UMD up 6-3. Trevecca Nazarene (7-7) added a final run in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice bunt. Junior pitcher Sam Hartmann (4-2) won for the fourth time in her last five decisions with an eight-strikeout, five-hit outing.
The Bulldog will have tomorrow off before returning to the diamond on Thursday for engagements with Mount Olive University and Indiana University (Pa.) in Clermont.
