After being held to just four hits in a 3-1 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference loss at Southwest Minnesota State University Sunday, junior pitcher
Sam Hartmann turned the tables and tossed a four-hitter of her own while leading the University of Minnesota Duluth past the Mustangs, 5-1, later that afternoon.
In the opener, a third-inning double by rookie catcher
Hannah Bloch and singles by sophomore center fielder
Hannah Schmoll, senior left fielder
Ashley Lewis and freshman designated hitter
Kalynn Tilton were all the hits UMD generated against Southwest Minnesota State's Alex O'Conner, who struck out eight and surrendered the lone run in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch after UMD had loaded the bases with no outs. Her counterpart, Bulldog senior
Cayli Sadler (10-6), gave up only five hits, but two of those were RBI doubles to Sam Flack. She also had four strikeouts in the complete game setback.
The Bulldogs (22-11 overall; 11-5 in the NSIC) bounced back nicely to close out the day as senior left fielder
Ashley Schilling registered her fourth, three-hit game of the season and stole a pair of bases while helping fuel a 5-1 triumph. The Bulldogs scored four times in the fifth inning, getting a clutch two-out, two-run RBI single from senior third baseman
Sami Schnyder and a RBI triple from sophomore
Natalie Wright, who had her 20-game hitting streak extinguished by the Mustangs' in the front end of Sunday's doubleheader. Wright continues to top the Bulldogs in batting average (.381), slugging percentage (.566), on-base percentage (.432) , doubles (eight), triples (three) and hits (43) and is tied with sophomore shortstop
Becky Smith for the team RBI lead with 27. Hartmann (10-5) had a no-hitter -- and a 5-0 lead -- going through five innings before Mustang right fielder Jazmyne Neely led off the sixth with single up the middle. She went on to fan four and walk one en route to posting her fourth career shutout, and second of 2016.
UMD will now launch an eight-game NSIC homestand, beginning with a pair of bouts against University of Minnesota Crookston on Tuesday afternoon (April 12) at either James S. Malosky Stadium or Junction Avenue Field.
