WOJCIECHOWSKI'S RECORD-SETTING CYCLE HIGHLIGHTS HIGH OCTANE UMD SWEEP

Senior first baseman Alex Wojciechowski hit for the cycle including his program record-setting 16th home run of the season in game two of the University of Minnesota Duluth's doubleheader sweep against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe the University of Sioux Falls in the Bulldogs' "home" opener playing at the Cougars' home park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

UMD (14-8, 7-3 NSIC) scored 48 runs in the sweep, knocking off Sioux Falls (10-13, 4-3 NSIC) by scores of 17-8 and 31-16 in seven innings. The four-touchdown, one-field-goal performance by the Bulldog offense marked a modern program record for runs scored (31), runs batted in (31) and hit-by-pitch (6). UMD needed just 20 hits to score 31 runs as they walked 10 times in addition to the six hit batters.

Wojciechowski finished the day 7-for-11 with two home runs (16), two doubles, a triple, 11 runs battedin and 10 runs scored. Senior third baseman Kyle Comer also had 11 runs batted in, finishing 7-for-9 with two homers (4), a double, and nine runs scored. Senior second baseman Jimmy Heck was 5-for-8 with a home run (7), eight RBIs, four runs and a pair of walks in the doubleheader.

Senior left-hander Bo Hellquist (4-1) tossed five innings in game one, allowing just one earned run while striking out six and scattering five hits before turning it over to the bullpen with a significant lead with Wojciechowski (five) and Comer (six) contributing 11 runs batted in during the opener. Senior left fielder Spencer Diedrich drove in two runs on a single in game one and followed it up with a home run (2) in game two. USF senior starter Patrick Anderson (1-3) took the loss after tossing 3.2 innings, giving up five earned runs on eight hits and three walks. He was relieved by three hurlers to combine who gave up nine more runs over the final 3.1 innings of the game.

In hitting for the cycle in game two, Wojciechowski also set a modern single-game record with six suns scored. He had a triple in the first inning and added the double and single in the second inning as the Bulldogs batted around in each of the first two innings. He'd tap off his day with the record-setting home run, one of four longballs by UMD in game two. Senior right-hander Austin Vaske took the mound to start game two for the Bulldogs but couldn't make it through five innings to pick up the win. Sophomore outfielder Rob Johnson and sophomore catcher Rob Merriam each hit two home runs for the Cougars, including an inside-the-park shot by Johnson on the windy day. Freshman righty Adam Hallberg (2-0) picked up the victory in relief, tossing 2.0 innings, allowing one hit, two walks, and striking out two. Freshman lefty Christian Lazar (0-1) who entered the game with just one run allowed on the year gave up six in 1.0+ innings of work against UMD. Sioux Falls used eight pitchers to get through the day.

After a long, high-scoring day for both teams, they will each return to the field tomorrow afternoon to complete the four-game set. Opening pitch between the Cougars and Bulldogs is set for 12:00 p.m. at Harmodon Park.
