Former Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen once called the Minnesota Twins of the mid-2000's "piranhas" for their ability to stay in the game and battle back for wins. The University of Minnesota Duluth brought out their inner piranha in the opener of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader at the University of Sioux Falls Saturday as the Bulldogs picked up all seven of their runs in the top of the sixth to take game one 7-2 and then rallied for a 7-5 victory in the rematch, scoring five times in the top of the seventh.
UMD is now 21-10 overall and remained in the thick of the NSIC regular season title chase with a 10-4 mark while Sioux Falls dropped to 26-13 in all games and 10-6 in league play.
In the opener, UMD trailed the Cougars 2-0 through five innings before sending 11 batters to the plate and piecing together a seven-run, six hit sixth. Sophomore shortstop
Becky Smith, senior first baseman
Ashley Lewis and rookie catcher
Hannah Bloch all went 2-for-4 while senior right fielder
Ashley Schilling also had a pair of hits and drove in two runs. Freshman
Valerie Hohol (2-0) picked up the win in relief, throwing no-hit ball after replacing senior
Cayli Sadler with one gone in the fourth inning.
The Cougars took a quick 2-0 first-inning lead in the nightcap and were up 3-2 after six, only to see the Bulldogs bounce back again. UMD took advantage of four Cougar errors -- three of which came with two outs --Â in the seventh innings and used a two-out, two-run double from Bloch to seal the win. Bloch paced the Bulldogs with two hits and she and sophomore second baseman
Natalie Wright, who extended her hitting streak to 20 games with a third inning single, both drove in a pair of runs. UMD starting pitcher Sam Hartman (9-5) allowed nine hits and two earned runs before being lifted with two outs in the bottom of the seventh for Hohol, who got the final out on a fielder's choice for her fourth save of the season.
UMD will face Southwest Minnesota State University tomorrow (April 10) in another NSIC twinbill with the first pitch set for 12 p.m. in Marshall, Minn.
