For the fourth year in a row, the University of Minnesota Duluth was crowned St. Olaf College Invitational champions as the Bulldogs took top honors at that 25-team event Saturday morning in Northfield, Minn.
Bulldog junior
Emi Trost (21:36) and senior
Breanna Colbenson (21:37) placed 1-2 overall, respectively, out of a field of 373 runners. Trost's time was just 0.5 seconds shy of the meet record set by former UMD All-American Samantha Rivard in 2014. (Another former Bulldog, Morgan Place, had held the mark the previous five years). Senior
Amber Seidenkranz, who like Colbenson has been part of all four St. Olaf Invitational title-winning teams during her time at UMD, finshed seventh in the 6K race with a time of 23:00 while junior transfer
Abby Moore was eighth (23:02 ). A pair of freshmen -- Melissa Drenkham (10th place; 23:23) and
Sarah Harrison (15th; 23:34) were the next two UMD finishers.
The Bulldogs, who owned a share of the No. 10 spot week's United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II poll, posted a team score of 28 points -- a hefty 69 points ahead of of runner up Carleton College. Host St. Olaf took third with 105 points and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire was fourth (124 points).
"We engaged in a hard workout week and based on that, I am pleased with our our performance today," said head coach
Joanna Warmington. "For our freshmen, this was their first collegiate race (last Friday's season opener in Moorhead, Minn., was a 4K competition, and I saw a lot of positive signs from that group."
UMD will be in Falcon Heights, Minn., next Saturday (Sept. 24) to defend its Maroon Division II title at the prestigious University of Minnesota Roy Griak Invitational.
