With so many attack options at her disposal, sophomore
Emily Torve has the ability to set those options in any array she wants. Tonight happened to go towards their senior middle blocker.
Allison Olley erupted for 13 kills and seven blocks, both personal season bests, in the 3-0 win (25-13, 25-18, 27-25) for the University of Minnesota Duluth over Minnesota State University Friday night at Romano Gymnasium. For a 12th consecutive match, UMD hit above the .300-mark to keep pace with its nation-leading attack percentage (.340).
The sixth-ranked Bulldogs took the first two sets with ease but needed an extended third set to finish off the Mavericks. UMD improved to 14-2 overall and pushed their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference record to 7-1 and kept their home record unblemished, moving it to 5-0. MSU-Mankato dropped to 9-7 and 3-5 NSIC.
Olley clobbered home nine of her first 14 attacks. She was Torve's security blanket on the night hoisting the most attacks. Her offensive brilliance transitioned defensively. The Racine, Wis., native packed five shots in the second set alone including two solo stuffs.
Beside the blocking, it was a group effort defensively. Five Bulldogs collected at least six digs. The Mavericks hit their second lowest average of the year. UMD held the opposition to an .100 percentage including a sloppy -.037 first set. Torve tallied 34 assists on the night. The Loretto, Minn., native, also contributed three of the Bulldogs' eight service aces. Sophomore defensive specialist
Keena Seiffert also nabbed three aces while collecting six digs. Junior right side hitter
Sarah Kelly and freshman outside hitter
Kate Berg each posted eight kills. Kelly had a set-high six digs coming in a back-and-forth third stanza.
UMD and MSU tied 11 times and switched the lead three other times. With the Bulldogs starting to falter head coach
Jim Boos called timeout down three points. The Maverick lead got to 21-17 before UMD reeled them in to knot the frame at 22-all. The Bulldogs still had to fight off three set points and needed an offensive barrage at the end to seal the victory. With a third set point looming, sophomore middle blocker
Abby Thor tied the match at 25. Berg knocked down two of the next three points to give UMD the advantage before junior outside hitter
Makenzie Morgen thumped the final kill.
The Bulldogs will return Romano tomorrow afternoon against No. 2 Concordia University, St. Paul for the Pack the Gym event that begins at 2:00 p.m.
