BEMIDJI STATE EDGES UMD 3-2 IN U.S. HOCKEY HALL OF FAME GAME

For two Western Collegiate Hockey Association teams playing in an unknown venue, the University of Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State University put on a show the rest of the league would be proud of Monday night.

Isanti County Arena in Cambridge, Minn. provided the perfect authentic hockey backdrop for the U.S Hockey Hall of Fame Game, where a capacity crowd watched the Beavers sneak by the Bulldogs 3-2 in a non-conference game.  Though the game didn't garner the Beavers any extra WCHA points, it was a big test for a UMD squad that hit the ice just 48 hours after completing a home series sweep of St. Cloud State University.  Bemidji State's last action prior to Monday night was against the Bulldogs back on Oct. 27-28.

"I think it was less about the fatigue factor and more about just having some lapses in judgment and discipline in the defensive zone that got us and gave them some easy goals, and we can't give them up," said head coach Maura Crowell.  "This is a tough league and you have to play 60 minutes hard and disciplined all over the ice.  The atmosphere was unbelievable and it would have been nice to go out on a positive note with a win, but we were really honored to be a part of this game."

BSU struck first on a backdoor pass into the slot, a one-timer from Clair DeGeorge at 7:55 of the opening period.

The Bulldogs then equalized off a BSU turnover at the 17:17 mark.  From behind the BSU net, rookie forward Naomi Rogge found senior defenseman Catherine Daoust in the slot, and Daoust skated in and beat BSU goaltender Kerigan Dowhy on the blocker side.

Emma Terres pushed the Beavers back into the lead 1:06 into the second period, but UMD again drew even off rookie forward Monique Aanenson's first career goal through traffic at 7:52.  The Bulldogs outshot the Beavers 11-8 in the stanza, but BSU doused UMD's second period spark when Terres netted her second goal of the game at 17:57.

BSU outshot UMD 34-25 in the game and remains the only team that has outshot the Bulldogs this season.  The Beavers have now outshot the Bulldogs in their three showdowns this season — by contrast, the Bulldogs have outsho their other opponents in all 10 of their games.

Dowhy had 23 saves in net for BSU, who improves to 3-7-1 overall, while UMD's Jessica Convery had 31 saves for the Bulldogs, who are now 1-2 against the Beavers so far this season.

The Bulldogs (5-8-0) will have the weekend off from outside competition before jumping back into WCHA action at AMSOIL Arena when they host Minnesota State University, Mankato on Nov. 17-18.

BULLDOG NOTES:  Naomi Rogge has now notched a point in her last five games … the freshman has posted three goals and three assists for six points over that span.
