Sophomore forward
Brandon Myer dropped 21 points and sophomore forward
Luke Harris chipped in 19 but it wasn't enough as the University of Minnesota Duluth fell to the University of Sioux Falls 91-66 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday night. The Bulldogs (2-6, 0-4 NSIC) are still looking for their first conference of the season after the Cougars (8-2, 4-1 NSIC) shot 56.3 percent from the field.
Myer went 8-for-15 from the floor and knocked down four of his five free throws. The Superior, Wis., native also tallied six rebounds and a couple of blocks and steals. Harris played 27 minutes off the bench and had three of his seven field goal makes come from behind the arc. The duo combined for 40 of the team's 61 points.
The duo on the opposite side of the floor was better tonight. Drew Guebert and Trevon Evans each compiled 26 points for USF as they shot a combined 20-for-32 from the floor. UMD tied using different matchups and looks but the duo was able to counter off good screens and even better ball movement to find and hit their shots.
With the game tied at nine, the Cougars went on a 13-0 run to grab a 22-9 lead. UMD had eight missed shots and a turnover during that span to open the door. That lead ballooned to 18 with 5:25 left in the half but the Bulldogs were able to slice it in half with just over a minute remaining. Sophomore guard
Trevor Entwisle buried a three off a Cougar turnover then Harris scored on back-to-back attempts. Finally, senior forward
Jake Wilson found the hoop twice and UMD went into the intermission trailing 43-33.
The Bulldogs got it to as low as nine in the second half before USF went on an absurd runs of 17-2 and 13-3 to break the contest open. UMD shot 37.5 percent for the game and had a season high 12 turnovers on the night. The Bulldogs came into the game as the No. 2 team in the nation in fewest turnovers per game.
Entwisle led all players with six assists, which was a season best by any Bulldog this season.
UMD will travel a few hours to Halenbeck Hall to play long-time rival St. Cloud State University next Saturday, Dec. 16. The contest will tip at 4:00 p.m.
