The University of Minnesota Duluth needed a clutch singles victory out of
Megan Anderson Saturday at the Quad Cities Tennis Club in Virginia, Minn., and the freshman once again delivered.
With the Bulldogs and the University of Mary knotted up at 4-4, Anderson downed Mary's Meredith Holt 6-4, 6-2 in the deciding match to seal the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match victory for the host Bulldogs. Anderson, who was moved up to No. 2 singles (in place of the injured
Drew DeCorsey) from her usual No. 3 spot, is now a perfect 5-0 on the year. Junior
Kelsey Zetah (No. 3), freshman
Elsa Erickson (No. 4) and junior
Katie Baasch (No. 6) all posted singles wins for UMD, which had trailed 2-1 following the three doubles events. Baasch, like Anderson, earned her second singles victory in as many nights, having prevailed in UMD's 5-4 takedown of Minnesota State University-Moorhead Friday in Duluth.
Junior team co-captain
Shelby Benkofske, who lost in a tie breaker in her No. 1 singles match against the Marauders, teammed up Zetah for an 8-4 triumph at No. 1 doubles.
The Bulldogs, who have won three straight and are off to their best overall start (3-2) since the 2010 season, will remain at home to host three opponents next weekend -- Gustavus Adolphus College (Friday) and NSIC rivals University of Minnesota Crookston (Saturday) and Bemidji State University (Sunday).
