The University of Minnesota Duluth remained in the thick of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament berth hunt by going 1-1 against pair of league opponents Saturday at the Sta-Fit Tennis Center in Sartell, Minn.
The Bulldogs (5-5 overall and 4-2 in the NSIC) opened the day by handing Winona State University its first loss of the season, a 5-4 decision, before falling 7-2 to unbeaten Upper Iowa University.
Against Winona State, UMD captured four of the six singles events, picking up wins from junior
Shelby Benkofske (No. 1), senior
Drew DeCorsey (No. 2) and freshmen
Megan Anderson (No. 3) and
Elsa Erickson (No. 5). DeCorsey and Anderson also prevailed at No. 2 doubles. Junior Katie Baash was a double winner in the 7-2 setback to Upper Iowa (5-0), taking out Breanna Heichert in straight sets at No. 6 singles and tamming with Erickson to win 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
Anderson (7-3), Erickson (6-4), DeCorsey (3-2) and Baasch (3-2) all sport winning singles records through 10 matches for the Bulldogs while Anderson and DeCorsey own UMD's best doubles mark at 4-3
The Bulldogs won't return to the courts until March 6 when they launch a four-day, five-match visit to Orlando, Fla. It will mark UMD's first Spring Break trip to the Sunshine State since 1996.
