The University of Minnesota Duluth closed out its four-day, five-match spring break visit to Orlando/Kissimmee, Fla., with an 8-1 loss to Wayne State University Thursday night.
UMD, which went 2-3 in the Sunshine State and is now 7-8 overall, got its lone victory against the Warriors (8-8) from junior
Shelby Benkofske, who defeated Dasha Kunetsova at No. 1 singles in a tie breaker. UMD, which was making its first spring trip to Florida in 21 years, opened the day by succumbing to Lee University 9-0.
Megan Anderson, the lone Bulldog to play singles in all 15 matches thus far, has compiled a team-leading 9-6 mark (primarily at No. 3). Her freshman teammate,
Elsa Erickson, is 8-6 (mostly at No. 5) while Benkofske (5-8 at No. 1) and junior
Katie Baasch (5-2 at No. 6) are next in singles wins. Benkofske and junior
Karly Weber (6-6 at No. 1) and Anderson and senior
Drew DeCorsey (6-4 at No. 2) pace the Bulldogs in doubles.
The Bulldogs, whose seven wins this season are their most in six years, won't return to the courts until April 1 when it takes on Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Southwest Minnesota State University in St. Peter, Minn.
