A tale of two games on Monday afternoon left the University of Minnesota Duluth with one win on the day - good enough for a series win over Upper Iowa University in the first weekend of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. The Peacocks held down the Bulldog offense in the opener for a 2-0 when, before UMD returned the favor with a 10-4 win of its own.
Upper Iowa 2, UMD 0
Junior Brett Fanning toed the rubber for Upper Iowa and tossed a gem, coasting through seven innings while scattering seven hits to earn his first shutout of the season. Junior right-hander
Nick Dorfman was nearly as impressive for the Bulldogs, tossing six innings with just two runs allowed. Dorfman added four strikeouts and avoided any walks in the outing.
The Peacocks got all the run support they needed in the fifth inning, when senior shortstop Luis Ravelo lined a single to left field to put the home team ahead. Upper Iowa tacked on another run in the sixth inning to move to a 2-0 advantage.
Senior outfielder
Matt Vogt slashed a pair of hits in a 2-for-3 game, while freshman infielder
Chase Thomas notched one hit in two tries. Four other Bulldogs also found themselves in the hit column with one apiece.
UMD 10, Upper Iowa 4
After being shutout in the first game of the afternoon, it took just three innings for UMD to tack a run onto the board in the rematch, as freshman outfielder
Drew Stewart picked up an RBI single, driving home sophomore
Eric Yachinich to grab a 1-0 lead. The third inning marked the first of six consecutive innings where the Bulldogs scored runs, highlighted by a two-RBI single by Yachinich in the fourth inning. Senior catcher
Marco Lucarelli also jumped into the scoring action with a line drive up the middle in the fifth inning to drive in junior
Tyler Midas.
Lucarelli concluded the game with a 3-for-5 performance and one RBI and run scored, while three Bulldogs notched two hits -- Stewart, Yachinich, and junior
Tyler Midas. Yachinich drove in three runs and reached base in four of his five plate appearances.
Senior
Kevin Stocke was called to start the game on the mound for UMD, and perhaps saw his best outing of the season. The lefty pitched 5.1 innings while allowing just two earned runs and striking out three Peacocks. Freshman
Travis Berg was the first out of the bullpen, pitching 1.2 innings with one run allowed. Sophomore
Ryan Cunningham and senior
Colton Sinning combined to close out the final two innings without giving up a run.
The Bulldogs will be back in action of Thursday as they will battle Bemidji State University at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn. First pitch is schedule for 12:30 p.m.
