Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The University of Minnesota Duluth climbed to 6-2 in the PFX Athletic Spring Games by splitting a pair of night games against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.. The Bulldogs fell 3-2 to Hillsdale College but bounced to shade Northwood University by the same score immediately after that..
UMD, which is now 9-7 on the year, has outscored its opponents 27-17 thus far in the Spring Games.
Freshman third baseman
Lauren Oberle got things going for the Bulldogs against Hillsdale, blasting a two-run home run; her team-leading fourth of the season. In the bottom of the first, a botched double-play attempt sent the ball sailing over second base, allowing a Charger to score. A single to the left side of the field drove in another for HC to knot things. In the second, a solo shot would put the Chargers ahead 3-2, and that's all they would need as they held the Bulldogs scoreless for the remainder of the game to win 3-2.
Working to salvage a spilt on the day, junior center fielder
Hannah Schmoll connected on a two-run home run, scoring sophomore catcher
Hannah Bloch, in the top of the third. Schmoll's home run was her first of the 2017 campaign and her first RBI since the University of Nebraska-Kearney bout. She would finish with two of the Bulldog's three hits. HC would get one back in the bottom of the third, and one in the fourth to tie things up at 2-2. Oberle picked up her third RBI of the day with a single to left field to bring Schmoll home for what would end up being the winning run. Veteran pitcher
Sam Hartmann (5-3) held the Timberwolves to just four hits and two runs while striking out several batters. Hartmann has now won four of her last five outings after starting the season 1-2.
UMD will wrap up its visit to Clermont, Fla., Friday with matchups against Saint Anselm College (1-3) at 2:30 p.m. and Southern New Hampshire University (5-1) at 5 p.m. Southern New Hampshire was ranked 25th in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Poll.
