On a cold, breezy day in Superior, Wis., the University of Minnesota Duluth (17-18, 12-11 NSIC) used a career-day from sophomore pitcher
Ryan Cunningham to edge out Concordia University-St. Paul (18-17, 12-11 NSIC) in a 1-0 contest.
The southpaw tossed 7.0 innings, striking out nine batters and allowing just one hit on his way to earning his fourth victory of the season. Cunningham (4-2) would not allow a Golden Bear player to reach second base in his outing.
Junior
Colin Baumgard relieved Cunningham in the eighth inning and retired three straight batters on groundouts. Baumgard surrendered a pair of baserunners in the ninth before senior
Colton Sinning shut the door with two outs to pick up his second save of the year.
UMD threatened in the second inning when senior catcher
Marco Lucarelli walked and advanced to third base after a steal and single, but was left stranded to keep the game scoreless. It wasn't until the bottom half of the seventh inning that either team scored when senior third baseman
Kyle Hoffman lined the game's only extra-base hit into the right field corner to drive in Lucarelli and put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0.
Concordia-St. Paul made things interesting in the ninth inning, loading the bases after a hit and a pair of walks, but Sinning retired junior outfielder Zach Elder on a fly ball to right field to end the game.
UMD totaled four hits on the afternoon -- two from Hoffman and an infield single by both Lucarelli and senior shortstop
Brian Pierce.
The Bulldogs will return the field this weekend for a home series with Minot State University at Bulldog Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
