FARLEY'S THREE HOME RUNS PROPEL BULLDOGS PAST BEAVERS

Senior outfielder Grant Farley's career-day and a walk-off hit by junior Tyler Midas helped the University of Minnesota Duluth defeat Minot State University in a pair of games Saturday afternoon at Bulldog Park. Farley tallied three home runs on the day and recorded six RBI, while Midas rolled a walk-off single through the left side of the infield to give UMD a game two win.

UMD 3, MISU 1

After both teams traded homers in the first inning, the bats went quiet as no runners would cross the plate in the final 5.5 frames. Minot State kick off the scoring with a solo shot from senior Sean Alp, but Farley's homer drove in three runs in the bottom half of the inning to give the Bulldogs all the run support they would need.

Junior southpaw Marcus FredericksonĀ (W, 2-0) recovered from the early run by coasting through six innings while allowing four hits and striking out 10 batters. The Eagan, Minn. native has now surrendered one run or fewer in three of his five starts.

For the Beavers, it was senior Kendal Daniels on the mound, pitching six innings with nine hits allowed and a pair of strikeouts.

Senior pitcher Colton Sinning (S, 3) was called as the closer to finish off the seventh inning, but ran into some quick trouble after hitting a pair of batters. Sinning worked his way out of the jam after facing runners on second and third with just one out, eventually recording a fly out and ground ball to second base to secure the victory.

Freshman outfielder Drew Stewart picked up two hits and scored a run, while Midas and senior Brian Pierce also added a pair of singles.

UMD 5, MISU 4 (10 innings)

The Bulldogs jumped on the board in the first inning with another Farley home run, pulling ahead 2-1. Also scoring on the play was Stewart, who had reached on a double down the left field line.

UMD would not tally another run until the sixth frame when Farley belted his third homer of the day over the left field wall to extend the lead to 3-1.

The Beavers scraped across a pair of runs in the eight inning to draw the score even, but the Bulldogs responded with a clutch hit from sophomore Ben Danielson to retake the lead. Once again, Minot State fought back in the ninth inning with a run to tie the game and force extra-innings.

It didn't take long for UMD to put a close to the game, as senior third baseman Kyle Hoffman reached first to lead off the inning. Hoffman advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Alex Welder, with Midas capping off the heroics on a walk-off single to the left fielder.

Freshman Rece Dietrich was phenomenal in his seven innings of work, giving up just two hits and an unearned run while striking out eight batters. Freshman Travis Berg was called out of the bullpen first in relief before Sinning entered the game for his second appearance of the day and pitched 1.2 innings while allowing a run.

Junior Colin BaumgardĀ (W, 4-1) pitched a scoreless 10thĀ inning while striking out a pair of Beavers to close out the game.
