The 2017 season came to a close for the University of Minnesota Duluth on Saturday afternoon at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament in Minnetonka, Minn., where the Bulldogs fell 5-0 to top-seeded Augustana University.
UMD, making its first NSIC tourney appearance in seven years, was swept in all three doubles matches and dropped a pair of singles matches to finish 9-13 on the year (after going 3-14 last spring). The nine wins were the most accumulated by a Bulldog club since 2009 while the 22 matches played equaled a program best.
Elsa Erickson (12-8, primarily at No. 5) and fellow rookie
Megan Anderson (11-10 at No. 3) posted the best singles record among 2017 Bulldogs while Erickson and junior
Katie Baasch went 6-4 in doubles (No. 3) for a team-leading .600 winning percentage. Senior co-captain
Shelby Benkofske and junior
Kelsey Zetah team upped to generate the most doubles victories with eight.
Both senior captain
Drew DeCorsey and Zetah, who will graduate this May, played in their final collegiate matches Saturday. The Bulldogs will also lose juniors
Karly Weber and
Rachel Menke to graduation as well.
