You can't stop her, your only hope is to try and contain her. That might be the gameplan the next time Bemidji State University goes to battle against junior right side hitter
Sarah Kelly and the seventh-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth. Kelly, the 2016 American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American honorable mention pick, wrecked havoc at the BSU Gymnasium Saturday afternoon exploding for a game-high 12 kills in the Bulldogs (9-1, 2-0 NSIC) clean sweep of the Beavers (3-7, 0-2 NSIC) in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action. UMD is now 91-3 all-time in the series having won its last 28 appearances dating back to when it last lost in five sets on Sept. 19, 1998.
Kelly, the product of Chaska H.S., has been effective you could possibly be. A career .360 hitter in her first two seasons, Kelly upped her season average again on Saturday to .513 after connecting on 12 of 18 swings with only two errors. She was six-for-eight and four-for-seven in the first two frames before BSU started to lean heavily towards her side to take that option away.
No problem for UMD and its setters senior
Sarah Heesacker and sophomore
Emily Torve. The setters collectively tailored their other choices to wrap up the match. Senior middle blocker
Allison Olley downed four of those points and sophomore outside hitter
Kate Berg and sophomore middle hitter
Abby Thor terminated a trio of third-set balls. Torve, who last season collected NSIC Freshman of the Year honors, dished out 27 assists with Heesacker, who passed out nine, spelling her in the rotation as the Bulldogs hit .365 for the game. UMD has not over the .300 in two of their games this season.
"Bemidji State came out with a lot of energy tonight and we were a bit on our heels in the first set," said head coach
Jim Boos. "Collectively, our defense picked up its intensity and our offense continued to run smoothly throughout the course of the game. Kelly has been a main focal point to that success. She has been on a tear to start the season, its probably the best start I've witness from a hitter in my 16 years here. They started to take away Kelly more in the third set and that opened up other choices, like Abby (Thor) and Allison (Olley) to get open looks."
The backcourt put forth a blockade on the Beaver attack. The Bulldogs held BSU to a .066 hitting percentage, a season-best for UMD.Olley notched three blocks including two solo rejections. Defensive specialists
Keena Seiffert and
Kelly Madison shared time as libero, earning 10 and nine digs, respectively. Outside hitter
Makenzie Morgen also tallied eight scoops as well.
UMD returns to its home floor Tuesday for a NSIC engagement against St. Cloud State University. First serve is slated at 6:00 p.m.
