NO. 6 BULLDOGS FEND OFF NO. 18 WILDCATS IN FOUR SETS

The University of Minnesota Duluth took out Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference enemy No. 18 Wayne State College in four sets Friday night at Romano Gymnasium to up its record to 11-1 on the season. The No. 6 Bulldogs (4-0 NSIC) had five players record double-digits kills and two collected 18 digs each. The Wildcats (7-5, 2-2 NSIC) have lost 11 of the past 12 meeting to UMD.

The Bulldogs continued their steak of hitting above the .300-mark for a fourth straight match and 10th time overall. Freshman outside hitter Kate Berg and Morgen led all players with 13 kills. Sophomore defensive specialist Keena Seiffert and junior outside hitter Makenzie Morgen each grabbed a share of the match-high 18 digs, and in doing so, Morgen notched her sixth double-double of the year. Sophomore setter Emily Torve dished out 51 assists on the night-- a match-high for the season. Middle blocker Allison Olley and sophomore middle blocker Abby Thor committed zero errors on 35 total swings. Olley (12 kills) and Thor (11) were apart of the five dogs to hit double-digits along with junior right side hitter Sarah Kelly (12).

UMD bolted out to a fast start in the opening set. Morgen, Kelly and Seiffert combined for six easy points on service aces as Wayne State couldn't control the serve. The Bulldog defense was even stingier having the WIldcats hit -.190 for the set with six errors and only two kills. WSC evened the match in the second set by frustrating the UMD attack and limiting the mental errors defending the serve.

The decisive set came in the third with both teams looking to take the momentum of the match. Both sides had opportunities to win the pivotal set as the lead changes hands four times and the game was tied on 12 other occasions. The Bulldogs trailed late 20-18 before Kelly knocked home three of the dogs next four consecutive kills to leap ahead 22-20. Olley delivered the final nail to the coffin two plays leter on a drawn-out point that changed sides seven times. The Wildcats had no answer as they fell in the closest set of the night 25-22.

The final frame was similar to set one as UMD jumped to another massive lead. The Bulldogs walloped 11 of their first 17 balls for kills with no errors to jump out to a 17-3 lead and won convincingly 25-10. The Wildcats had their attack percentage dip below zero again in the fourth and final set as their counterparts hit .615 to close out the contest.

UMD returns to the court tomorrow afternoon with another duel against NSIC-ranked foe Augustana University. The No. 12 Vikings won in four sets over St. Cloud State University tonight. Action starts at 2:00 p.m. at Romano Gymnasium.
