NO. 8 NORTHERN STATE POWERS TO 92-71 VICTORY OVER UMD

The Northern State University gameplan all night was simple. Attack the undermanned University of Minnesota Duluth down low.

The No. 8 Wolves got into the paint time and time again Saturday night in Romano Gymnasium and the Bulldogs had no answer. Northern State dominated the paint scoring 40-16 inside the restricted area en route to a 92-61 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over UMD. The loss ended the Bulldogs' four-game home-winning streak. The Wolves (20-2; 14-1 NSIC) have won two straight in the series and the last six in Romano. The Bulldogs (9-10; 5-8 NSIC) last beat Northern State at home on Dec. 17, 2011.

The Wolves went to the half with a sizable 15-point lead and out muscled UMD in the paint 22-4 and in second-chance points 14-2. The Bulldogs shot only 33.3 percent in the half and could never recover from the physically. NSU's two big men Logan Doyle and Cater Evans combined for 30 points and 19 rebounds. Evans had his way in any matchup the Bulldogs threw at him and also compiled six assists from his post position. Doyle had a double-double on 7-of-8 shooting.

UMD, who played with nine men, did finish shooting 39 percent after a 14-for-32 effort in the second half. Sophomore guard Logan Rohrscheib was a bright spot producing career highs in points (28) and three-point field goals (6). He shot 10-of-16 from the field and 60 percent behind the arc. The Eau Claire, Wis. native, garnered two steals, a pair of rebounds and an assist on top of his game high 28.

With injuries to five guys, freshman guard Xavier Cummings got an extend look on the floor. The Hayward, Wis. native played a career high 21 minutes and wasn't afraid to attack inside and take contact. The freshman ended with seven points, two assists and a rebound.

Next weekend the Bulldogs will be on the road the play Augustana University and Wayne State College. The Vikings are first up for UMD on Friday, Jan. 26 at 8:00 p.m.
