The fourth largest home winning streak in program history just reached 20 matches.
The No. 7 University of Minnesota Duluth took care of business tonight at Romano Gymnasium dumping Winona State University in straight sets. The Bulldogs retained their two-match lead on third place and still remained within reach of the top billing in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. UMD received solid offensive production and even better defensive work. The Warriors hit .069 for the match, the lowest hitting clip for Winona State in a league match this season as the Bulldogs marched to a .313 hitting percentage.
UMD is now 18-4 overall and 11-2 in conference play as it swept its 13th opponent on the year. The Warriors fall to 9-12 and 6-7 in the NSIC and now trails the series 77-2.
The Bulldogs are two home wins away from tying their third longest home winning streak. They cracked off 22 consecutive wins from Sept. 4, 2012 to Oct. 18, 2013. Of the four longest streaks to date, head coach
Jim Boos has been at the helm of all but the leading 37 victories in-a-row ranging from Oct. 23, 1978 to Oct. 14, 1981.
Defensive specialist
Sydney Lanoue sparked UMD again from the service line. On Tuesday, the freshman rallied off 11 straight points to capture the pivotal third set against St. Cloud State University. Tonight, the Tracy, Minn., native one-upped herself running off 14 straight points with her serve to turn a tight 11-13 first set into a nonchalant 25-13 comfortable set win. The Bulldogs clamped down defensively in the second to take the second set 25-17. Winona State, which hasn't collected a win in Romano, struggled with only five kills in the second and piled up eight errors. It hit -.083 in the set as UMD had two of its three blocks in that middle frame. The Bulldog offense ignited in the final set hitting a robust .571 with 17 kills to close out the match after breezing through 25-16.Â
Junior libero
Keena Seiffert has flirted with a few brilliant nights digging out the ball but she put forth her best collegiate effort tonight. The Warriors kept smashing balls at Seiffert and the Chaska, Minn., native kept digging those attacks out to junior setter
Emily Torve, who finished with 45 assists -- the most by Torve in a three-set match this season. Seiffert dug out a career high 26 balls, just etching her previous total of 25 she established once this season and once last year. Senior outside hitter
Makenzie Morgen also had double-digits digs with 15 .
Senior right side hitter
Sarah Kelly and sophomore outside hitter
Kate Berg each had a match-high 14 kills. Berg hit a respective .306 from the outside and was consistent in every set hammering home at least four kills in all three sets. Kelly destroyed her matchup on the inside thumping home kills at a .619 clip, her highest attack percentage since returning from injury. Kelly had seven kills in the first set and was 5-for-7 in the third. The 2017 first team AVCAÂ All-American was also in on all three blocks.
For Winona State, Taylor Goar finished with a team-high five kills and 15 digs. Bre Maloney had a match-high five blocks for the Warriors.
The Bulldogs look to complete the weekend sweep with their annual pink game tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. against Upper Iowa University.
