The final weekend of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular season is shaping up to be a wild finish.
Nan Glinsek scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season and
Carlye Wright shut down the University of Sioux Falls as the Bulldogs polished off the Cougars 1-0 at Malosky Stadium Sunday afternoon. The win pushed UMD into a three-team tie for the final postseason spot in the NSIC Tournament. The Bulldogs, who entered today one point out of the eighth and final playoff spot, are tied with Northern State University and Winona State University with 19 points. The Wolves beat Concordia University, St. Paul 1-0 and the Warriors lost to Minot State University to set up the dramatic final week.
UMD executed its part today with Glinsek and Wright playing critical roles.
Glinsek netted her fifth career goal in the 55th minute to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. UMD came out of the half and mounted additional pressure on the Sioux Falls' backline. Junior forward
Logan Nash crossed the ball to senior forward
Natalie St. Martin in front of the goal. Instead of taking a contested shot with the keeper and a defender in solid position, St. Martin made the extra pass to the open Glinsek and the junior midfielder calmly booted it into the net. For Glinsek, she has three of her four goals this season in the last four home matches. The Lino Lakes, Minn., native has given the Bulldogs consistency on Griggs Field as they are winners of the last four home matches, sweeping the back-to-back home weekends.
Holding on to the 1-0 advantage, UMD had its senior goalie step up. Wright made five saves including laying out to stop a strike by the Cougars' Lauren LaFavre. The North Woods, Minn., native directed the defense to not allow many opportune scoring chances. Sioux Falls attempted six shots in each half and were called offsides three times.
The Bulldogs tried 23 shots and landed eight on goal. Nash registered five shots, leading all players. Junior defender
Mikayla Iaquinto had a team-high two shots on goal. LaFavre led the Cougars with four shots and two on goal. Sioux Falls has not beaten the Bulldogs (0-6-1) and have been outscored by UMD 15-2 since the first encounter in 2012.
UMD hosts the University of Mary, who is one point ahead of the Bulldogs, in its final home match on Friday at 1:00 p.m.
