For the second straight match, the University of Minnesota Duluth played tenaciously for the right to advance to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate postseason and sneak in to the eighth and final playoff seed. Minot State University, who was solidifying their postseason positioning, knocked off the Bulldogs 1-0 in Minot, N.D. on Sunday afternoon. Haley Berryman tallied her ninth goal of the season at 28:28 mark and the Beavers were able to hold off the relentless Bulldogs.
UMD dropped back-to-back 1-0 decisions on the final weekend and closed out the regular season 7-10-1 and 6-8-1 in conference play.
The Bulldogs end their season on a low note with their own offenses struggles telling the tale of the season. UMD lost a total of seven matches by a goal including four 1-0 losses in the final six games. It outshot opponents 301-194 on the season but scored two less goals. The Bulldogs were strong defensively all season, particularly due to the efforts of its goalkeeper tandem, including senior
Carlye Wright, who stepped in for the injured senior captain
Sisley Ng midway through the year and made two saves on nine shots faced on the afternoon. Unfortunately, the team did not find enough offense consistently and it happened again Sunday.
It was an all-out effort on the attacking end sending wave after wave trying to desperately tie the match and grab the lead. Senior forward
Natalie St. Martin had team high three shots while juniors
Logan Nash,
Nan Glinsek, and
Emily Hinz each attempted two shots. The Bulldogs amounted seven shots-on-goal against the Beavers' Erin Rafferty, but couldn't make good on any of those chances.
With the season finale, UMD says farewell to a group of eight seniors: Wright,, Ng, St. Martin, midfielder,
Madison Carey, midfielder
Laura Edgren, defender
Lizzy Fontes, defender
Erika Hjort, and forward
Destiny Schmitz.
