The University of Minnesota Duluth won it's 2018-19 regular season opener with a 51-45 victory over Northern Michigan University on Tuesday evening in Marquette, Mich. The Bulldogs shot 39 percent from the floor but the Wildcats didn't fare much better from the court, shooting 29 percent.
UMD (1-0) limited Northern Michigan (2-1) to under 12 points in each quarter. The Wildcats coughed up 16 turnovers that the Bulldogs converted into 20 points. UMD was 10-for-24 from three-point land as it drained 41 percent of its looks from beyond the arc.
Senior guard
Sammy Kozlowski nailed a three with 5:16 remaining to give UMD its largest lead of the night. The Bulldogs lead by 11 at the half and maintained their lead for all of the second half.
The Wildcats used their physicality to get to the line and hit the glass. NMU went to the line 18 times while UMD only got there three times. The Wildcats also out rebounded the Bulldogs 41-21 as UMD acclimated seven more shots with the added possessions off turnovers and limited time at the stripe.
The senior duo of Kozlowski and forward
Emma Boehm combined for 22 points. Kozlowski had 10 while Boehm had 12. The tandem produced 9 of the club's 14 points in the defensive battle.
Taylor Hodell racked up a game high 14 points for Northern Michigan.
The Bulldogs will head back home and rest up for another road adventure, this time to Springfield, Mo., on Tuesday, Nov. 20 against ninth-ranked Drury University.
