DOWN, BUT NOT OUT, BULLDOGS MOUNT EPIC RALLY AND DUMP DENVER IN OVERTIME

Box Score For over 100 minutes Devin Cooley kept the University of Minnesota Duluth offense at bay. But enough was enough.

After being shutout by the University of Denver netminder in Fridays National Collegiate Hockey Conference series opener, the top-ranked Bulldogs found themselves trailing the Pioneers 3-0 seven minutes into the third period. UMD then found its scoring groove and proceeded to strike three straight times to force overtime and capped off the remarkable 4-3 comeback victory on freshman left winger Cole Koepke's goal 52 seconds into the extra session.

With the win, UMD improved to 9-2-1 overall and 3-1-0-0 in the NCHC and snapped a seven-game losing skid to the No. 7 Pioneers (6-3-1; 3-3-0).

Denver took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission and led 3-0 after two before sophomore right winger Nick Swaney banged in a rebound to get UMD on the board at the 13:04 mark of the third period. Less than three minutes later, senior right winger Billy Exell cut the Bulldog deficit in half with his first goal of the year off a wrister from near the inside edge of  left faceoff circle. With UMD junior goaltender Hunter Shepard pulled for an extra attacker, sophomore All-American defenseman Scott Perunovich fired a shot from the high slot that trickled past Cooley with a mere 1.8 seconds to go in regulation.

On his first shift after the third intermission, Koepke busted down the left wing and went high to the stick side of Cooley, extending the Bulldogs unbeaten run in overtime games to 20 (they are 9-0-11 since losing to host North Dakota on Feb. 19, 2016).

UMD, which outshot the Pioneers 45-29 on the night and 83-43 in the series, is off next weekend and won't return to the ice until Nov. 30-Dec. 1 to host the University of North Dakota.
