MORGEN AND TORVE NAMED CoSIDA GOOGLE CLOUD ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS

University of Minnesota Duluth senior outside hitter Makenzie Morgen and junior setter Emily Torve have been named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America Division II Women's Volleyball team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The pair makes the Bulldog volleyball the only program nationally with multiple Academic All-Americans.

Morgen repeated as an All-American attaining first team honors after claiming a third team selection in 2017. Torve, who became the third UMD volleyball player to ever attain CoSIDA Academic All-American volleyball honors, was selected to the second team. She joins her teammate Morgen and Allison Fanta, who was a 2011 second team honoree. 

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Morgen, a native of Appleton, Wis., maintains a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average as a biology major. She was also a repeat winner of the NSIC Elite 18 Award for volleyball at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament (given to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating on an NSIC championship team). She finished the season first on the team with 342 kills (3.02 kills per set) and second in digs per set at 2.87. The biology major is currently leading the club with 334 kills. She also set collegiate high in digs (28) in the NSIC Tournament against Upper Iowa University. Earlier this season, Morgen became the 21st member of the Bulldog 1,000 kill club. Morgen finished with 1,063 kills and 952 digs while averaging 3.52 points per set. 

Torve, who was was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Assocation All-American second team, ranked third in the country with 12.69 assists per set and the fourth-most assists this season across the Division II landscape. The chemical engineering major has a 3.94 GPA Her 1,472 assists is most a UMD setter has handed out since 2014. It was another highly potent offense once again with Torve at the wheel as the Bulldogs hit .268 for the season, seventh best in the nation. The native of Loretto, Minn., rolled off four straight weeks as the NSIC Setter of the Week, a believe-to-be-league first. She is sixth all-time among Bulldog setters with 4,184 assists, which is the most by any junior at any collegiate level. She also tops the charts in the NCAA landscape in assists per set (12.23).
