MARY HANDS UMD ITS FIRST NSIC LOSS OF THE SEASON

The McDowell Activity Center has given the University of Minnesota Duluth fits time and time again and today was no exception. The Bulldogs didn't have enough to sustain the University of Mary firepower as the Marauders won 82-76 Saturday afternoon.

The drought continues in Bismarck as UMD has not won inside the MAC the last six tries dating back to Jan. 28, 2012.

Mary (5-1 overall; 3-0 NSIC) has won four straight and is now one of two teams left in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division to remain undefeated in conference play. It was the first NSIC setback for the Bulldogs (3-2 overall; 2-1 NSIC).

Mary ran out to an 17-7 advantage early in the first but Kozlowski got UMD back within five at 19-14 at the quarter break. Kozlowski had seven of her team-leading 25 in the quarter. Cassie Askvig had eight points to lead all scorers after 10 minutes. The Marauders held UMD to 25 percent shooting in the second quarter as they extended their lead to 37-28 at the half. The game got away from the Bulldogs in the third quarter with Mary converting on the other end on almost every possession. The Marauders pushed the lead up to 21 with 3:43 left in the third, their largest of the night.

UMD mounted up a furious comeback attempt and made things intriguing late with 31 points in the final quarter. Gabbie Bohl connected on a pair of free throws to put Mary ahead by 18 with 5:33 remaining. From there the Bulldogs would outscore the Marauders 22-10. UMD forced six turnovers during that span and cut lead down to six before time expired. The Bulldogs went 2-for-2 from behind the arc in the first half and went back to firing from downtown in the fourth as they hit on four threes. Senior guard Emma Boehm had eight of her season high 17 points in the final 5:33 of regulation. She finished three points off her career mark. Senior guard Sammy Kozlowski tied her career high with 25 points (Upper Iowa University Jan. 14, 2017).

Bohl led the Marauders with 30 points as she had her way in the paint. Cassie Askvig also chipped in a good effort against UMD as she compiled 22 points and a game high 13 rebounds. The Marauder duo combined to go 19-for-30. Meanwhile, the Bulldog forwards mustered only five baskets on 28 attempts. Mary had no problem converting from the field as it shot 61.2 percent. The Bulldogs, on the other hand, were limited from the floor, knocking down 34.8 percent.

The Bulldogs are back on the court for their 2018-19 home opener next Friday against the University of Sioux Falls, who have won its last six games.
