Every day should be senior day for forward
Jake Wilson.
Wilson was dialed in with a game-high 24 points tonight to propel the University of Minnesota Duluth to a 67-60 win over the University of Mary and take the weekend sweep. Wilson, the native of Zimmerman, Minn., was 8-of-13 from the floor as he tied his career high tonight. He previously had 24 points in the home game against the Marauders a season ago.
During the pregame warm-up, Wilson and his fellow teammate
Kyle Schalow were honored along with student manager Alec Polovina with a brief ceremony recognizing their dedication to the program. Both Wilson and Schalow were tabbed with the start tonight. Wilson had six rebounds and a pair of steals to go along with his 24 points. Schalow played 21 minutes and tallied three points on a top-of-the-key three-pointer and pulled down two rebounds.
With leading scorer sophomore forward
Brandon Myer on the bench with two early fouls, the Bulldogs had to look elsewhere for their production. U-Mary hit 53.8 percent in the first half but wasn't able to sustain a big lead thanks to Wilson. The product of Zimmerman H.S. scored 12 straight points for UMD to close out the half and keep the Bulldogs down only four heading to the break.
U-Mary was able to extend its lead to 11 with a touch under 15 minutes remaining and was closing in on returning the favor to UMD, who stole a road win earlier in the year. Within the next three minutes, the Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run to get the game back to a single possession. Trevor Zacher knocked down a three with under four to go to give the Marauders, who led for over 30 minutes, a six-point cushion. UMD was 2-14 in games this season when trailing with five minutes remaining coming into tonight and the U-Mary three by Zacher seemed to take the wind out of the sails in Romano Gymnasium.
Bad news for the Marauders as that was the last points they would score for the night.
Wilson had different plans as he rattled home a three of his own along the baseline the very next possession to electrify the gym and he later tied it on a pair of free throws with 2:47 left. Myer gave the Bulldogs the lead after he swished a corner three. Freshman forward
Jake Paper slammed the door shut with under a minute remaining as he collected a loose ball on the offensive end after a block and kissed the glass on his baby hook to give UMD a two-possession lead. U-Mary missed its last six shots as its final desperation three attempt failed to draw iron.
The Bulldogs swept U-Mary for the first time since the 2012-13 after splitting with the Marauders the previous four seasons. UMD improved to 11-15 and 7-13 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Meanwhile, U-Mary dropped to 5-19 on the season and 3-17 in the conference.
UMD will close out the 2017-18 regular season on the road with bouts against Northern State University Friday, Feb. 16 and Minnesota State University, Moorhead Saturday, Feb. 17.
