HUSKIES KEEP BULLDOGS DOWN WITH 76-63 VICTORY

Gage Davis had 25 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists to lead St. Cloud State University past the University of Minnesota Duluth Tuesday at Romano Gymnasium. Davis was 9-of-15 from the field including 3-of-6 from long distance. Sophomore forward Brandon Myer attempted to keep pace with the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division Preseason Player of the Year. Myer ended the night with 25 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for his fifth double-double, second in as many games, but the Bulldogs fell 76-63 to the Huskies.

UMD (9-15; 5-13 NSIC) knew it had a tall task trying to knock off SCSU (18-6; 14-4 NSIC) for the first time in four games. The first half didn't start well for the Bulldogs as they dug themselves a 10-point hole within the first nine minutes of action. The Husky offense gave the defense too much the handle in the paint as SCSU had 24 of its 36 first-half points in the paint and converted the only seven points off turnovers. Davis and Tristen Hull repeatedly got inside as they combined for eight buckets inside the restricted zone. UMD shot 28.6 percent in the half and trailed 36-23 at the break.

The Huskies started the second half converting on their first five shots as a 10-4 run pushed the SCSU lead up to 19. The Bulldogs whittled it to eight with 2:28 remaining that started with a 7-0 run on a three by Myer and back-to-back turnovers turning into easy layups by sophomore guard Trevor Entwisle and junior forward Sean Burns. The Huskies buried a pair of threes in the closing minutes to end the comeback threat.

Senior forward Jake Wilson grabbed his first start in 17 games after a 19-point performance Saturday against Concordia University, St. Paul. Wilson played 33 minutes in his retuning to the lineup and gathered eight points, three assists to go along with a pair of steals and rebounds. Burns was the only other Bulldog in double figures adding 12 points on 50 percent shooting.

SCSU shot 54.9 percent for the game, making them the seventh team in the last eight games to hit at least 50 percent of its attempts. UMD was 36.7 percent for the game.

The Bulldogs will wrap its home regular season slate and five-game homestand this weekend against Minot State University and the University of Mary starting with the Beavers on Friday, Feb. 9.
