The University of Minnesota Duluth held Minot State University to three points on 1-of-8 shooting in the second overtime session to topple the Beavers 80-78 in double overtime at Romano Gymnasium on Friday. UMD had its defense show up when it needed it the most as it fended off game-winning looks the the end of regulation and in the first overtime. The Bulldogs put a stop to their six game Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference losing skid and sent Minot State to its fifth consecutive loss.
UMD advanced to 10-15 overall and 6-13 in the NSIC while its counterparts went to 18-7 and 11-8 in league play. The win tonight was the first extra session victory in five tries. The last overtime win by UMD came on Jan. 2, 2016 after upending Concordia University, St. Paul 85-83 at home.
The Bulldogs held the lead one second shy of 41 of the possible 50 minutes. UMD was in control throughout the match as the Beavers largest lead was two late in the first half. The Bulldogs never trailed in the second half or in either overtime period. UMD knocked down five of the six free throws in each overtime period.
Minot State was 26-of-75 from the floor. That 34.7 percent mark was the lowest the Bulldogs gave up all season. The previous low was 37.5 against Bemidji State University. UMD had a hard time stopping offensives coming into tonight as opponents were shooting above 50 percent in seven of the last eight contests.
Four players for the Beavers registered double figures including 21 points from Tyler Rudolph. Sophomore guard
Brandon Myer recorded his third consecutive double-double with a game-high 25 points and career-high 15 rebounds. Myer also dished out four assists and three blocks. Senior forward
Jake Wilson added 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting and junior forward
Sean Burns was one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard
Trevor Entwisle had six points, seven rebounds and seven assists before heading out with an injury.
UMD will honor its seniors, Wilson and
Kyle Schalow, tomorrow evening against the University of Mary at 4:00 p.m.
