It's been a long, long few weeks for the University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team. With the win in game two, the Bulldogs ended their nine game losing streak. UMD (16-23; 12-15 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) fell 6-0 in game one, but rebounded to take the rematch 8-6 against Northern State University (15-17; 8-12 NSIC).
The nine game losing streak was the longest for UMD since losing 14 straight to start the 2013 season. During the rut, the Bulldogs were outscored 88-30. 21 of those runs came in games two and three of the Minot State University series.
Pitcher Luke Chevalier (W, 4-3) commanded the mound for the Wolves, tossing a complete game while striking out nine and allowing just three hits and one walk on 103 pitches. Sophomore Chase Thomas was responsible for two of UMD's three hits in the game, both one-out singles to left field. It was Thomas' second multi-hit game of the season, the other came against the University of Findlay back on March 7 when he had three hits (two doubles and a single).
In game two, the Bulldogs halted their nine game losing streak with a 8-6 victory. Back by a solid performance on the mound by senior Colin Baumgard, UMD struck first in the top of the first inning with three runs. Thomas garnered his second straight multi-hit game after going 2-for-4 at the plate with, you guess it, two more singles. Thomas now has a hit in four of his last five games after not having a hit in eight-straight games prior.
UMD will play NSU again tomorrow (April 29) Â in a twinbill with the first game starting at 12 p.m.
