The University of Minnesota Duluth officially closed the books on the 2018 season Saturday afternoon with a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference losses to the University of Minnesota Crookston, falling 5-0 and 6-5 at Bulldog Park.
The Bulldogs, who were swept by the Golden Eagles in the four-game weekend series, finished 16-29 overall and 12-20 in the NSIC.
Minnesota Crookston (24-27 overall, 10-22 NSIC) got a six-hit, five-hit complete game performance from pitcher Parker Hanson in the opener. His Bulldog counterpart, senior
Marcus Frederickson, also gave up six hits, but allowed five runs (four of them earned) before being relieved in the top of the sixth by
Adam Hallberg. The junior righthander kept the Golden Eagles hitless and struck out three in his two innings of work. Senior catcher
Tyler Midas paced the Bulldogs with a pair of hits, including a double to lead off the sixth inning.
In the season finale, UMD found itself down 6-1 before scoring four times on four hits in the bottom of the eighth. Golden Eagle reliever Zach Seipel struck out the lone batter he faced that inning and then blanked the Bulldogs in the ninth for his 8th save of the year. Midas, senior right fielder
Brett Milazzo and sophomore
Chase Thomas each had three hits for the Bulldogs, who used 25 players -- including six pitchers -- in the setback.
Saturday's twinbill marked the end of the collegiate line for UMD's five seniors -- Midas (who wrapped up the year with a team-leading .333 batting average and a .497 slugging percentage), Frederickson, Milazzo, pitcher
Jalen Busker and third baseman/pitcher
Colin Baumgard.
UMD's five seniors and their families were recognized Saturday at Bulldog Park
