The University of Minnesota Duluth has had a stranglehold on many of its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competitors over the years. St. Cloud State University has been a victim to the Bulldogs dominance up until tonight. The Huskies defeated the sixth-ranked UMD to snap a 32-match drought to the Bulldogs that dated back to 1995. Fueled by its home court advantage, St. Cloud State (7-2; 3-0 NSIC) ramped up the momentum to sweep UMD 25-22, 25-17, 25-19.
SCSU trailed 20-18 in the opening set and rallied on a 7-2 run to close the first set with a 25-23 win. From there, the Huskies grabbed the second set hitting .519 and Lindsay Rachel closed the match for St. Cloud State with a dominating seven-kill effort in the third.
The true freshman kept finding way to collect kills as she finished with a match-high 17 kills. UMD (8-3; 2-1 NSIC) had no answer to slow down Rachel, who committed only two errors on the night. Her .455 hitting clip boosted the Huskies to a .270 attack percentage for the match -- the only club thus far in 2018 to hit above the .200-mark against the Bulldogs.
Outside hitter
Makenzie Morgen paced UMD with 13 kills. Morgen tried to keep her team within distance all night as she swung a match-high 34 times. Even with all the attempts, the senior from Appleton, Wis., still notched a respectable .294 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter
Hanna Meyer was one kill shy of double figures as she also attempted a career high 26 attacks.
The Huskies hindered UMD to a .123 hitting clip. Four Huskies has double-digit digs with libero Clara Krenz leading the way with 15 defensive saves. The Bulldogs made 20 errors on 114 attacks.
UMD will attempt to rebound on the road this weekend with a pair of NSIC road assignments. First up is Minot State University on Friday night followed by the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D., on Saturday.
