OFFENSIVE BLAST CARRIES BULLDOGS PAST GOLDEN EAGLES

Junior forward Logan Nash, freshman midfielder Julia Osborne and freshman Hannah Caldwell scored goals for the University of Minnesota Duluth in a 3-0 offensive onslaught Tuesday afternoon against the University of Minnesota Crookston.

The Bulldogs (2-3; 1-1 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) camped in the offensive end nearly the entire contest. They battered 26 total shots and 15 shots on goal on the Golden Eagles (0-5; 0-2 NSIC). The 15 shots on goal was the most by a Bulldog squad in 35 games when they had 17 against MSU-Moorhead on Sept. 23, 2016.

UMD altered formations and pressed extra attackers into the upper third and it paid off. Nash broke through on a header off a corner by senior defender Lizzy Fontes. Soon after, the pressure mounted even more as Osborne capitalized off a turnover and rifled it top shelf.

The Bulldogs held a 2-0 lead at the break but that soon changed four minutes into the second half. Caldwell notched her first collegiate goal on a beautiful feed from the outside by senior forward Destiny Schmitz. Osborne corralled a loose ball and looped it to the outside toward Schmitz, who blazed down the left wing and beat the defender. Schmitz centered the ball and Caldwell placed it to the opposite post.

Freshman Kirsten Dagel and redshirt freshman Haley Ford were entrusted by head coach Greg Cane with their first collegiate starts. Dagel played center back in the first half and helped UMD allow only two shots on the afternoon. Ford played 44 minutes and registered two shots with one finding its way on goal.

The Bulldogs marked the Golden Eagle striker Maggee Hodgdon. The freshman came into the match with the team-leading two goals and was shutout on the stat sheet without a shot attempt.

UMD is 15-1-1 in 17 all-time matchups against Minnesota Crookston and have won the last three contests.

The Bulldogs have an off day tomorrow before heading back out on Highway 2 to Bemidji State to play the No. 14 Beavers Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Chet Anderson Stadium.
