The University of Minnesota Duluth won every set on Saturday afternoon at the McDowell Activity Center by margins of 10 points or more in the three-set sweep of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival the University of Mary.
The Bulldogs used a 7-0 run to close the opening set, a 8-0 run in the middle of the second and a 6-0 run to begin the third in a beat down of the Marauders (3-10; 0-5 NSIC). UMD trailed in five points throughout the duration of the 63-minute match as the Bulldogs (10-3; 4-1 NSIC) sunk the Marauders for the 15th straight time for the weekend sweep.
Sophomore outside hitter
Kate Berg mustered a double-double in the win on a match high 11 kills to go along with 10 digs. This was Berg's second solid performance in a row after downing 15 kills on a .481 hitting clip the night prior against Minot State. Berg also tallied five blocks and a collegiate high four aces. The Medina, Minn., native hammered home six kills in the first and turned into a defensive machine in the final set with six digs and a pair of blocks.
Senior outside hitter
Makenzie Morgen hit .412 on nine kills and pushed UMD to a .304 attack percentage. Sophomore outside hitter
Hanna Meyer erupted in the final frame for five of her seven kills. Junior
Emily Torve had 27 assists while freshman middle blocker
Summer Ballard also achieved a career high as she garnered five blocks. For the match, the Bulldogs registered eight total blocks.
Madison Bergthold earned a team-high six kills against UMD. UMary hit .039 and almost had as many errors as kills (19 kills to 16 errors). Of the Marauders three primary attacks, Bergthold had the most success against the stingy Bulldog defense. The middle blocker hit a mere .176. Sydney Murphy had only 12 assists and Natalie Cruz led the Marauders on the defensive end with eight digs.
UMD returns home to take on the Minnesota State University Moorhead next Friday for NSIC action in the newly renovated Romano Gymnasium in the first of a five-match home stand.
