OSBORNE'S FIRST CAREER TALLY AND HJORT'S HEADER PUSHES BULLDOGS PAST WILDCATS

Freshman midfielder Julia Osborne and senior defender Erika Hjort each scored in the second half of the University of Minnesota Duluth's 2-0 shutout of Northern Michigan University on Sunday. The Bulldogs even their record to 1-1 and have knocked off the Wildcats (1-1) on the road for the second consecutive season.

UMD dominated the second half of play outshooting Northern Michigan 11-5 and 15-11 for the match. Eleven different Bulldogs registered a shot with sophomore forward Holly Kaboord taking a game-high three shots.

No goals were scored in the first half but the Bulldogs used their ball possession and shot advantage in the final 45 minutes to grab both their markers.

The first goal came with Osborne being in the right place at the right time. Osborne stuffed a pinballing ball in the box into the net to break a scoreless tie in the 65th minute. It started with a turnover by Brianna Frontuto, the Wildcat keeper. Frontuto miskicked the ball and the ball ended up in Kaboord's possession. With Frontuto out of the net, Kaboord raced up and fired a shot at the net but it was blocked by the last defender.

On the ensuing corner, Alli Jenkins gathered the ball and shot towards the net. Senior forward Natalie St. Martin deflected it just enough for Osborne to take advantage of the open net in front and squeezed it past Frontuto and the near post.

Osborne's first collegiate tally gave the Bulldogs all it would need but UMD got an additional marker late.

Hjort headed in her third career goal as an insurance marker with under a minute remaining. The goal came on another corner kick. Junior midfielder Nan Glinsek toyed with the defense on the endline and rocketed a cross right on to the head of Hjort, who directed it into the net with 31 ticks in the game.

Carlye Wright received the start at goalkeeper for the second straight match. The senior stopped four shots including a diving shot by Wildcat striker Taelor Moore.

UMD will play the University of North Dakota in a non-conference match on Wednesday, Sept. 5 in East Grand Forks, N.D. It will feature the first matchup between the two squads since 2007.
