MOLLER NETS HAT TRICK FOR FIGHTING HAWKS TO TAKE DOWN BULLDOGS

A rivalry put on ice for 11 years came to life in favor of the University of North Dakota as it got a natural hat trick by Katie Moller to down the University of Minnesota Duluth 3-0 this afternoon in East Grand Forks, N.D. The Fighting Hawks (4-1-0) got all their production from their leading scorer as Moller netted her fourth, fifth and sixth tallies of the season.

The Bulldogs (1-2-0) allowed a season-high 21 shots to the Division I club as it couldn't find a way to keep pace with Moller and the rest of the Hawks. UMD, which trails the all-time series 2-7-3 to its old North Central Conference foe, attempted 12 shots of its own but couldn't put the North Dakota shutout streak to an end, which extended to 470 minutes. UMD applied pressure at times with a game-high five corner kicks.

The Fighting Hawks threatened early netting three shots in the first 5:04 of action. Olivia Knox had two of those attempts including one just 29 ticks into the contest. Senior forward Natalie St. Martin attempted the Bulldogs first attempt in the 8th minute and junior forward Logan Nash recorded the first shot on goal at the 9:38 mark.

Moller scored to put North Dakota up 1-0 at the 14:10 mark. Megan Wright fed the ball to Moller who fired her shot past Carlye Wright. The senior goalkeeper played the first half and made four saves.

UMD almost knotted the game roughly two minutes later when senior forward Destiny Schmitz had both of her attempts denied. The Fighting Hawk striker struck again in the 21st minute, this time unassisted, to increase the North Dakota lead up to 2-0.

The Bulldogs retaliated with their own offensive blitz but had nothing to show for it as Hawks' keeper Olivia Swenson didn't let anything pass. Swenson was able to corral a header by sophomore forward Holly Kaboord and a laser shot junior midfielder by Nan Glinsek. UMD held a 9-7 shots advantage after 45 minutes.

Moller capped off her hat trick in the 50th minute pushing the ball past senior goalkeeper Sisley Ng, who saw her first action of the season after sitting out the first couple matches. Ng played the entire second half and stopped six shots.

North Dakota tightened down its defenses holding a 3-0 lead in the second half. It allowed shots from Schmitz, Glinsek and junior midfielder Emily Hinz in the final 45 minutes. Schmitz ended with a team-high three shots as seven different Bulldogs got a shot off during the contest.

A pair of UMD players saw the pitch for the first time in a Bulldog kit. Redshirt defender Shannon King played in her first collegiate action subbing in at the 34:52 mark of the first half while true freshman forward Mandy Conkel received her first collegiate playing time two minutes later.

The Bulldogs stay on the road to play St. Cloud State University on Sunday, Sept. 9 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener at 7:00 p.m. It is the fourth game of a six-game road stint to start the season.
