ALBERTA SKATES PAST BULLDOGS IN EXHIBITION OPENER

DULUTH, Minn. -- The University of Minnesota Duluth opened the 2019-2020 campaign Saturday night with a 5-3 loss in an exhibition matchup with the University of Alberta at Amsoil Arena in Duluth, Minn.

The Golden Bears got on the board first when Dalton Hamaliuk snuck a loose puck past senior goaltender Hunter Shepard with 6:56 left in the first period. It wouldn't take long for the two-time defending national champions and No. 1-ranked team in the nation to answer. With 21 seconds remaining in the opening frame, junior forward Justin Richards found the back of the net on assists from sophomore forward Cole Koepke and senior defender Nick Wolff.

The Golden Bears would go back on attack three-and-a-half minutes into the second period when Curtis Miske wrestled another loose puck into the Bulldog net, this time beating sophomore goaltender Ben Patt. The Bulldogs would answer back even quicker this time on a power play when junior defender Dylan Samberg's wrister from the top of the right faceoff circle beat Alberta goalkeeper Brendan Burke. The goal came just under three minutes after the Golden Bears reclaimed the lead. Samberg was assisted by junior defenseman Scott Perunovich and Richards. Alberta would take their third lead of the game at the 17:01 mark in the second period on a shot from Lucas Nickels to give the Golden Bears a 3-2 advantage. Nickels was assisted on the go-ahead goal from Noah Philp and Ben Carroll. A minute later, Dawson Davidson would double Alberta's lead with his shot from the blue line sneaking into the Bulldog net.

The Bulldogs responded 33 seconds into the third period when junior forward Nick Swaney placed a backhand shot in the top of the net to cut the Golden Bear lead to 4-3. On the goal, Perunovich recorded his second assist of the night. Halfway through the third period, Alberta would put the Bulldogs away when Nolan Volcan beat freshman goaltender Ryan Fanti to stretch their advantage back to two goals.

Notables:

Shepard played only the first period between the pipes for the Bulldogs and finished with nine saves while allowing the opening goal. Patt served the second period in net for UMD and recorded five saves and surrendered three goals. Fanti made his first unofficial appearance in the third period for the maroon and gold and picked up nine saves.

The Golden Bears placed 28 shots on goal, four more than Bulldogs' tally of 24 on the evening ... UMD was 1/2 on the power play with five shots on the advantage while Alberta was 0/3 with only three shots.

The Bulldogs will open regular season play at Amsoil Arena next Friday (Oct.11) in a nonconference clash with the University of Massachusetts-Lowell with the puck dropping at 7:07 p.m.
