Minnesota State University-Mankato did something Friday night that no other club had been able to do since opening night of the 2019-20 season -- beat the University of Minnesota Duluth in its own barn.
The No. 1 Mavericks busted open a 0-0 deadlock with a three-goal second period and went on to upend No. 8 UMD 4-1, snapping the Bulldogs' six-game home unbeaten streak. Minnesota State (11-1-1 overall) struck twice on the power play with the second of those coming 3:35 into the third period before UMD finally got on the board midway six minutes later on junior right winger
Kobe Roth's man advantage goal from near the left side of the goal creas. Roth finished off a tic-tac-toe play that started with sophomore center
Jackson Cates connecting on a pass with sophomore right winger
Tanner Laderoute, who fed Roth. With the secondary assist Cates extended his personal scoring streak to a career-high four games.
Senior All-American goaltender
Hunter Shepard, who came into the night having gone 3-1-0 with a 1.73 goals against average in four career starts against Minnesota State, made 26 saves while his Maverick counterpart, Dryden McKay, finished with 27 stops.
"It was like men among boys out there for awhile," said UMD head coach
Scott Sandelin, whose Bulldogs fell to 7-5-1 overall. "I thought our first period was all right, but they took over the game in the second period. It's disappointing and we got to find a way to play better."
The two former Western Collegiate Hockey Association rivals will meet again on Saturday in UMD's final AMSOIL Arena appearance of 2019.
