It wasn't the Bulldogs day.
Minnesota State University Moorhead reign superior in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchup of the league's top two clubs on Saturday at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse. The University of Minnesota Duluth fell 72-56 to the Dragons, whom take solo possession of first place in the NSIC with two games left.
The Bulldogs (17-6; 16-4 NSIC) are one game back in the conference race but have already locked up a first-round NSIC home playoff game. MSU Moorhead (21-5; 17-3 NSIC) snapped UMD's seven-game winning streak -- was the longest streak heading into today -- similar to the Bulldogs ending the Dragons' 14-game winning streak in late January.Â
The Dragons were able to score over 70 points on the top-ranked defense in the NSIC. The last time the Bulldogs surrendered at least 70 points in a contest was 36 days ago in their 78-71 win over the University of Mary. MSU Moorhead shot 45 percent from the field and hit on eight three-pointers. The Dragons were the first team all season to shoot better than 50 percent from beyond the arc.
UMD struggled to get anything going offensively as the Bulldogs shot 24-for-69 (35 percent). UMD corralled 15 offensive rebounds but the second-chance opportunities weren't enough to make a difference. Sophomore forward
Sarah Grow had a game-high 19 points for the Bulldogs. Grow pulled down seven boards and had a block as well. Senior guard
Sammy Kozlowski added nine points and a team-high five assists. Freshman forward
Brooke Olson had a team-high eight rebounds along with seven points.
The Dragons built a 14-point lead with six three-pointers in the first half. UMD shot 36 percent in the first half, and it only scored eight points in the second quarter. MSU Moorhead ended the final three minutes of the first half on a 10-2 run as the Bulldogs ran off into the locker room seeking adjustments. However, the third quarter wasn't much better as the Dragons pushed their lead up to 22. Megan Hintz had a double-double for MSU Moorhead with 18 points, a team high, and 10 rebounds.Â
The Bulldogs return to action on Friday, Feb. 22 to kick off the final weekend of the regular season with the University of Minnesota Crookston. Opening tip of that NSIC contest is set for 5:30 p.m.
