One day after being swept by the University of Minnesota Duluth in its opening day Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader, Upper Iowa University turned the tables and defeated the Bulldogs twice -- 3-1 and 15-4 -- Sunday afternoon in Quincy, Ill.
In the opener, the Bulldogs managed just four hits and generated their lone run in the top of the seventh inning on senior pinch hitter
Cory Krolikowski's two-out double. He drove in junior right fielder
Chris Saltzmann, who went 2-for-3 in the setback. Sophomore
Mitchell Waletzki, in his second start and third appearance of the young 2019 season, was touched up for eight hits and three runs in five innings of work while rookie
Ben Shepard worked the final three innings and allowed just three hits.
UMD (4-7 overall; 2-1 NSIC) spotted Upper Iowa (4-4; 1-2 NSIC) an early 3-0 lead but struck for a pair of runs in both the second and third innings to go up 4-3. The Peacocks then scored four times in the bottom of the fourth and put the non-conference game away with a three-run third and a five-run fifth. The Bulldogs got one hit each from six players, including junior first baseman
Alex Welder, who had a double and accounted for half of UMD's four RBI. Six different Bulldogs did mound time and collectively gave up 15 hits with only junior starter
Jaylen Hakes (2.2 innings) throwing more than 1.1 innings.
UMD's season-opening road show continues this Wednesday with a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader against defending NCAA Division II champion Augustana University.
