NEW YORK TECH USES LATE OUTBURST TO RALLY PAST BULLDOGS IN 2019 SEASON OPENER

The University of Minnesota Duluth took a 10-4 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning only to see the New York Institute of Technology rally for nine unanswered runs and down the Bulldogs 13-10 Friday afternoon in Kissimmee, N.Y.

UMD, making its 2019 season debut, pounded out 11 hits in the setback to the Bears (5-2 overall).

Sophomore center fielder and lead off hitter Henry George paced the Bulldogs by going 3-for-5 with one one double while junior left fielder Drew Stewart and senior third baseman Eric Yachinich (a double and a triple each had a pair of hits. Senior designated hitter Tyler Wojciechowski, who spent most of the 2018 season battling the injury bug, drove in three run and homered for the eighth time as a Bulldog.

UMD's  Mitchell Waletzki made his first collegiate start and went five innings, giving up four runs (all earned) and scattering six hits. He also fanned five before being relieved by fellow sophomore Liam Blashko, who faced just eight batters and kept the Bears scoreless in two innings of mound duty. Both senior Alex Ferguson and sophomore Sean Flaherty worked the eighth inning.

The Bulldogs will take on the University of Sioux Falls in a non-conference nine-inning matchup on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. (ET) in Auburndale, Fla.
