BRODT AND ROONEY EARN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP GOLD

In a IIHF World Championship final that will be talked about long after the ice melts, the U.S. National Team won its fifth-straight gold medal with a shootout win Sunday at Metro Areena in Espoo, Finland over host Finland.  The U.S. win makes University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey junior captain Sydney Brodt a first-time world gold medalist, and secured a second gold medal for junior goaltender Maddie Rooney.

The U.S. side went 7-0 in the tournament, and in those seven games, Brodt contributed two assists.  Rooney manned the pipes in two skates, and did not surrender a single goal in either game.

Two former Bulldogs earned bronze medals with Canada, which drubbed Russia 7-0 in the bronze medal game.  Former All-American Jocelyne Larocque and Brigette Lacquette, both defenseman, anchored Canada's blueline in the tournament over seven games.  Lacquette posted six assists, putting her in a tie for the second most helpers in the tournament and 19th overall scorer.  Lacquette was also +7.

UMD alum Pernilla Winberg finshed the tournament with one goal and four assists for Sweden over five games, while former Bulldog goaltender Jennifer Harss (who won an NCAA title with Larocque in 2010) posted a 2.67 goals against average in four games with German, recording the third most saves in the tournament (159) in 246:44 of action.
