BULLDOGS TOPPLES MARY TWICE TO OPEN THE WEEKEND

Strong starting pitching and 33 hits on the afternoon propelled the University of Minnesota Duluth to a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference sweep of the University of Mary (22-3 and 3-0) Friday at Wade Stadium in Duluth, Minn.

In the record-setting 22-3 rout, the Bulldogs, who had every starter hit safely at least once, exploded for a season-high in runs and hits with 27. It was the first time since March 15, 2011 in a 23-3 triumph over the University of Minnesota Crookston, that UMD plated at least 22 runs in a game. The Bulldogs also tallied at least 27 hits in a game for the first time since April 25, 2012. That time, they scorched Southwest Minnesota State University for 29 hits in a 21-8 victory. Junior lefty Rece Dietrich (3-2), in his seventh start of the 2019 campaign, provided the Bulldogs with another strong outing. In six innings of work, he surrendered only two earned runs on six hits while fanning one and issuing zero walks. Senior right-hander Jeremy Thorson, in his eleventh appearance of the season, came in relief to finish off the Marauders in game one.

Sophomore center fielder Henry George (3-for-4 with 3 RBIs), junior right fielder Drew Stewart (5-for-6 with 5 RBIs), senior first baseman Tyler Wojciechowski (2-for-4 with 2 RBIs), rookie shortstop McCale Peterson (4-for-5 with a RBI), senior left fielder Cory Krolikowski (3-for-3 with three  RBIs), rookie pinch hitter/left fielder Tim Pokornowski (2-for-2 with 3 RBIs), senior third baseman Eric Yachinich (2-for-3 with a RBI), and junior catcher Reid Rubio (2-for-3) all chipped in multiple-hit efforts for the Bulldogs.

In the rematch, the Bulldogs (10-25 overall and 8-16 in the NSIC) got on the board in the fourth inning when Yachinich ripped UMD's fourth triple of the afternoon to left-center, driving in junior first baseman Alex Welder. Yachinich would advance home on the next at-bat when Rubio grounded out to shortstop to give UMD a 2-0 advantage over Mary (12-24 overall; 8-16 NSIC). In the sixth, rookie third baseman Gage Merhar blasted a solo shot over the right field wall, his second of the season and as a Bulldog, stretching UMD's lead to 3-0. Sophomore right-hander Mitchell Waletzki (1-2), in his fourth start of the season, tossed a scoreless seven innings, giving up two hits while fanning seven and issuing four walks in the victory. Peterson came in relief to get the final out in the ninth to shut the door on Mary's afternoon with his third save of the season.

The Bulldogs will square off with Mary in another doubleheader tomorrow, April 20, at NBC Spartan Sports Complex in Superior, Wis. with first pitch at noon.
