MINOT STATE USES WALKOFF HOMER TO COMPLETE TWINBILL SWEEP OF BULLDOGS

The University of Minnesota Duluth dropped a pair of road assignments (9-3 and 6-5) Friday against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Minot State in Minot, N.D.

In the opening setback, the Bulldogs got on the board quickly when senior first baseman Tyler Wojciechowski blasted a two-run home run to right field in the first, scoring sophomore center fielder Henry George. It was Wojciechowski's fourth homer of the season and eleventh as a Bulldog. Rece Dietrich (3-3), in his eighth start of the 2019 campaign, was torched by the Beaver bats for six earned runs on nine hits while fanning five walking none in 5.2 innings of work.

In the rematch, the Bulldogs (12-29 overall and 9-21 in the NSIC) grabbed the lead in the fourth inning when senior third baseman Eric Yachinich ripped a double to left field to drive in Wojciechowski and later in the frame, rookie shortstop McCale Peterson advanced home on a wild pitch to give UMD a 3-2 advantage. The Bulldogs would add two more runs in the seventh when junior catcher Reid Rubio scored on another wild pitch and junior right fielder Drew Stewart brought in sophomore second baseman Anders Brown on a base hit to right. Mitchell Waletzki, in his sixth start of the season, tossed six innings for the Bulldogs, surrendering three runs on three hits while striking out one and issuing six walks. Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the ninth, the Beavers (28-14 overall; 21-8 NSIC) walked off the Bulldogs on a three-run home run from junior center fielder Trevaun Smith.

The Bulldogs will get two more opportunities to take down the Beavers tomorrow, April 27, in a doubleheader beginning at 1:30 p.m in Minot, N.D.
